Old Skala

hiya, i'm going to Skala in May for the second time and i'm hoping to do abit more exploring as last time it was my first holiday away with a friend and i was only 17 so we were abit unsure of the place and didn't look around much.
Now that i know how friendly everyone is and easy it is to get from place to place i was wondering if anyone could tell me how to get to Old Skala??
I have heard it mentioned alot and would love to visit there when i go back. We don't drive so it'll have to be by taxi or even better, walking.
Also if anyone knows of any interesting places not too far away that we could reach by taxi, bus or walking then it'd be a great help!! :o) want to see as much as poss!!

thanks alot, luv lisa! xx :D

Lisa,
to get to Old Skala, just walk up the steep main street and keep going!!!!
You will come to the football pitch at the top of the village, just keep following the track which winds up and up!

Old Skala

There is a good website called http://www.kefaloniaisland.com that tells you all about old Skala and how to find it.
If you click on Resorts and Villages under the useful Information section and then go to Skala, it tells you about Skala and then about old Skala. It is very interesting and there are some good pictures.

Hi Lisa

Roger walked to the Old Village when we were there last August (well most of the way). He asked one of the locals how to get there and he kindly gave him a lift part of the way in his old battered car and put him on the right path. Make sure you take a drink with you especially if it is very hot as it was when Roger went.

Not long for your holiday now - enjoy yourself.

Jan

So, walking both slowly and briskly, how long do you think it would take to walk upto old Skala?

Also would it be at all possible to take a car up there or part of the way at least?

Roger reckons it takes at least 1 hour to walk up to the Old Village and that you could drive up there in a 4 x 4. In a car you would have to take it slowly. Allow yourself at least an hour to look around. It was last August when we were there and very hot and I myself did not go - but hoping to this year.

Thanks for that. We go in August and its a definite for us but from the sounds of it i could do with a pack horse to carry all the water we'll need. Looking forward to it mind.
Thanks Jan

Hi Jerry

We go 26th August for two weeks so hoping I make it this time. Roger took off while I was in the pool cooling off as it was a very hot day.

We go 14th august for 2 weeks. Works well as we're going to the festivals at Marcopaulo and Ag.Gerassimos also.

My only worries about old Skala are a 14year old and a 12 year old who may moan about the walk so taking the car up so far may be the answer i think.

Might be a good idea especially if they don't like walking and it will be hot in August.

We have just been out to celebrate our sons 21st and he has moaned just walking down the road from the pub (lol).

Hope you enjoy it anyway.

To have a look around skala and get a real flavour for the old village, get a self-guided trail for skal from friends of kefalonia. the trail takes about an hour and gives you a real feel for the place. you can download a digital version from their site

Bear,

I would say realisticly its a 4 hour round trip, only walking. Take more than one drink and pace yourself. Once there you will appreciate the climb.

I started at 7 in the morning - a good time - as it wasn't so hot. Back by 12 to throw myself in the pool and vow never to do it again!

Ols Skala

For those that haven't made it up to Old Skala yet, this is a fairly new shrine at the top...... Now that should spur you lot on to get up there now!!!
There is also a beautiful grave yard that you can go and look in and plenty of other things that are worth the visit.

I'll be there in 2 weeks.

From what i can gather i can take the car to a fork where i can park so that'll make it easier to walk.

I'll get loads of photos. Does it get very busy up there? Will i actually be able to park?

When I went up in May it was very quiet. We took our scooter up to the fork and there was quite a bit of room up there to park, most people don't drive up they just walk so it should be ok.
We only came across another couple of people, but I have never been in August.
It's definately worth going up there, there is so much to see, I have a lot of pictures but that was the only one we took on the camaera phone.
Be careful as there are now a few bee hives up there too..
The views are spectacular, I can't wait to go back in September.
Enjoy your self Jerry!

It's excellent that you have done so much research on the place before you go!

That's no shrine Hollie - that's my house!!! :D

No seriously folks, you can see my plot in the background on the right.

Jerry make sure your batteries are charged! Last time I went up there (May) I did a series of shots for a panorama and ran out of juice before I could do the defintive shot of my plot. Grrr!

By the way everyone I have the publishing rights to the book Jerry is going to write when he gets back.
Jerry's Kefalonian Odyssey. Everything will be covered in this combined guide and personal diary!!!

£10 to me now to reserve a signed copy.

Argh , i always do Hollie. Saves us loads of time and makes a holiday so much more interesting and memorable. Always hire a car and tour the whole island so that we never need go back a second time, in order to see other parts of the world.

Great site this. Anything i couldn't get from the internet i asked on here and pretty much always got the answer, hence so many posts.

Yes, the price is fantastic...only difference is no coach transfer...we're having Greekstones deliver to the airport, but then the coach hire would be added onto the brochure price anyway.

The downside to all this ofcobottom which i've just realised is from last year to this if, god forbid , a hotel burnt down, how would you stand with getting your money back? whereas ofcobottom a travel agent would simply move hotels.

Anyway, really really excited.

Jerry

I was determined to visit old Skala.Ypu can buy a walking route map at the kiosk in Skala. It is a good guide.WE took the car as far as we could then it got rocky,it was really too hot to continue on foot so my husband decided to abort the visit. It warns you of snakes, some harmless some not so,(poisonous) so beware. Will definatly visit next time maybe when its cooler.we did ,however see the 2 watwe tanks they mention in the guide lol.have a wonderful time. you WILL.blank chris

LOL

I'm worried now. I hope i don't disappoint everyone with my ' Jerry's Kefalonian Diary'..lol

Ok Helen you keep a copy but it's only fair we let Jan have the first distributed one..lol

Jed.....i have to say the lure of Mythos is a major attraction to publishing rights ( if a little too early in the day ) but if Helen offers me free stopovers at her villa (with Mythos) then that'll be hard to turn down...goon fight over me you two....LOL

Chris..how long ago were you up there? How far could you reach in the car? Hollie mentioned a fork in the road that you could get to to park...did you rech here or further?

SNAKES.....I HATE SNAKES..OHH NOOOO

How real is the possibility of seeing these. We're going to Marcopaulo for the festival (Jan wants to go) and i go cold at the very thought of it. This is the lad who froze solid in the living room watching Raiders Of The Lost Arc when he opened the tomb so the thought of them on the Old Skala trail is very daunting.

I'll still go but not relaxed...I HATE SNAKES.

Jerry I have been up there a few times now and the only things I have seen up there are goats, bees and sheppards!! I have never seen a snake!! I am the biggest wimp ever and would run a mile if I came across one.
I think you will be safe!!
My dad did see one in the garden of our apartment though but it dissappeared pretty rapidly!!

I hate them too and spiders!!!

But I wasn't worried at all about them, as long as you don't go wading through fields of long grass etc then you will be ok.

I should think the snakes are just as afraid of us and would rather keep out of our way.

The snake my dad saw was a really long one and was like a whitish sort of colour I think..... Whoops perhaps I shouldn't have told you that!! LOL You'll be alright, seriously... No one can be more of a wimp then me!!! :D

Where snakes are concerned Hollie, trust me, i AM more of a wimp than you. You know these places that have them on the seafront and take photos of you with them around the shoulders......well i have to cross over the road to go past them.

All started as a kid in London Zoo...enquisitive little me pressed up against the glass watching the snakes in the reptile house when all of a sudden...i remember it as a cobra but not positive whether it was or not took off launching itself at me, bouncing off the glass infront of my nose. My dad pulled me off the ceiling and i think i cried. From that day on i freeze when they're on the telly and wake up in the night with nightmares of the things.

And no, you shouldn't have told me that....lol
