info about hill walks on Kef
Does anyone know of good walks on Kef or where to get information about walks?
I enjoy a couple of days walking in the hills when I'm in Kefalonia and wondered if anyone knows of good day and half day walks on the island,
preferably near Skala or Assos. Have walked up Aenos and round Old Skala up to Razatkali previously.

Thanks Ivan and lets-go. I like the look of the Assos walk here. I'm still looking for day walks (starting VERY early to avoid walking around mesi
mera or under cover of the Kefalonian pine).
Have tried to get a large scale 25-50,000:1 map before and will have another go. I have got a feeling the large scale maps are difficult to come
by-something to do with the military?

maps and walking in Kefalonia
I have just got back from Skala and as well as a great beach holiday managed a couple of decent walks. One was an old favourite walking to Katelios
and back along the beach. There has been a serious rock fall, since I last did this walk three years ago, which means a difficult scramble over the
rocks or wading up to four feet deep for a short stretch coming into Skala beach, which is what everyone does on the way to the nudist beach, Moundas
etc.
The other walk was on an un-tarmaced road from Poros to Lazarou and then a footpath continues on where there is a no entry sign for off-roaders and
follows the coast through olive groves and mountain brush to Kontsoupia beach (mini-Myrtos), which can only be reached by boat otherwise. 26kms from
Poros and back and 12 kms from Lazarou and back if you have an off-roader. There is quite a lot of cover from the sun and a great swim at the end but
the walk is probably best done in May or October or ONLY early morning and late afternoon in high summer.
The path is easy to follow as there are red painted marks that way mark the route. I met other walkers on the holiday who told me there are good
way-marked routes from Agia Efimia to the top of a nearby mountain and from Sami to Antisami beach. I also finally found a 1-50,000 Freytag Bernd map,
which was on sale in Skala and showed quite a lot of footpaths, mostly in the north of the island.
All in all, a great addition to the holiday and a scene reminiscent of 'Ice Cold in Alex', when, low on water, I fainally reached a cool and shady bar
on my return to Poros and asked for a litre bottle of water and large Mythos!!

A few years back a couple who lived here then wrote a series of books called 'The way to go on Kefalonia'. They covered a range of walks across the
island and were well written. Sadly they are no longer in print but odd copies do come up on Ebay or Amazon. I also saw one of the editions in the
Marias supermarket in Lourdas last week!
Hard to get hold of but well worth the effort!
